Peter GoodchildTue, 23 Aug 2011 08:33:29 +0000http://www.canadaprepared.com/?p=340#comment-391Peter -- Excellent! You've renewed my faith in Doom and Gloom. A few comments. (1) You say that cottaging is a way of life in Ontario – I was once sharply reprimanded for saying that, and reminded that it is only the Idle Rich (such as you and I) who actually own cottages. (2) You describe your location almost to the seconds of longitude and latitude – I'm not sure I'd want my own location to be traceable on Google so easily. (3) While I agree that chain saws make firewood-production easier, there are still other options to consider – the natives used only stone axes (and fire to char the wood before chopping it), and they had the advantage of much smaller dwellings to heat (hence less wood necessary). The ubiquitous Swede (bow) saw is a maybe, but I suspect the best choice would be a modern (I stress, modern) timber saw, one of those six-foot things with enormous teeth, available at Lehman's Tools – I didn't have a chance to buy one before going overseas, but it's on my present shopping list. One also might want to consider a central open hearth, as in the early Middle Ages, rather than an enclosed iron stove – less need to cut wood into short lengths. (4) You didn't mention the fact that the chickadee in the background would fit nicely on a hamburger bun. -- Peter GoodchildPeter — Excellent! You’ve renewed my faith in Doom and Gloom.
