Episode 8 – About Self Actualization
Sep 30, 2009 Preparedness and Mazlow
This podcast finishes off Mazlow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The next podcast is a bit more meat and potatoes.
Hopefully the hierarchy has helped you identify the needs we all have beyond food storage and evacuation plans. The point to preparedness is to take care of life’s little, and big, emergencies so we can get on with the business of living life to the fullest. It’s more than surviving, it’s thriving!
Training Day
Sep 25, 2009 Uncategorized
Hey Folks. No show again today. I showed up at work and found out I had a ride along with me. I was training a new employee. So, I didn’t want to freak the guy out by recording a podcast right in front of him in the truck. Maybe I should have anyway. What do you think?
I did play the latestest from thesurvivalpodcast.com though. He didn’t complain and laughed at a few of the jokes. Maybe he got something out of it. He seemed pretty freaked out by Alex Jones’ Infowars though. LOL!
The new guy seems like a good guy. Smart and has some common sense. I hope he does well in his career.
My daughter won an academic award and the ceremony was tonight. So no recording it at night either! Drat. But I’m terribly proud of her.
Tomorrow is my birthday, and I think the new guy will be riding with me again, so there is a good possibility of no podcast tomorrow either. To remedy this situation, I’m going to record a few on the weekend, and try to record two a day for awhile so I have a stockpile. This methodology of stocking up in preparation sounds familiar…where have I heard of this before?
About birthday’s – do you know why we celebrate them? It has nothing to do with being thankful for a person being born. It has to do with be thankful that they lived another year. It wasn’t that long ago when the infant mortality rate was much higher. Even into the teens, it wasn’t too shocking to lose a child or two. That’s a big part of where birthday celebrations came from. Of course, like all other things, our western society has made a gong show out of it all with soccer-moms burning platinum cards to celebrate little Brittany’s 2nd birthday with a full-fledged circus. Too opinionated? Oh well.
Preps for apprenticeship test are picking up. Working on the FAC book too. Wrote some nice articles for MakeUseOf.com. I’m especially proud of the Hallowe’en DIY list. Hallowe’en is a big holiday at our home.
Well, cheers friends. Thank you for sticking in there with me. I’m working on some sweet plans for an affordable solar generator to share with you.
The Sound of Silence
Sep 24, 2009 Uncategorized
As I drove along today, talking about the 4th and penultimate level of Mazlow’s Hierarchy, I had some thoughts and knowledge to share with you that surpassed the wisdom of the ages. I had revealed the secret of eternal joy AND how they get the Caramilk in the Caramilk bar.
Sadly, all that I recorded was 27 minutes of silence. Sadly, I no longer have my notes on how to turn lead into gold and the map to Atlantis. I’ll try again tomorrow, but it won’t be nearly as good as today’s podcast would have been, had it been recorded.
Episode 6 – About Love and Intimacy Needs
Sep 23, 2009 Uncategorized
I’ve never heard of this being talked about on any preparedness website, yet it is a fundamental need of life. Without it, there’s not much point in going on after a cataclysmic event, other than the hope for intimacy somewhere down the road. So that’s what I touch on today. That gives an overview of this level of Mazlow’s hierarchy.
Plus there was the promised rant about advertisers and retailers using these needs to manipulate us.
Special shout out to new forum members who are also starting to share their experience and expertise. We’ve got RainCoastGhost with a wealth of economic and financial information, Kymber, the moderator of the Canadian Prepper’s Network and now we have a bona fide Zombie Hunter in Mechanik! I was hoping we would get some Zombie Hunters – they’re cool and funny people. Can you believe we’ve had over 1100 unique visits already? In just 2 weeks? Go team!
Tomorrow should bring level 4 of the triangle – Esteem. I know you hardcore ’survivalist’ types might not appreciate all this touchy-feely stuff, but it’s a fact of life and if we’re going to be self-sufficient to any degree, we need to talk about this. Don’t worry, there’ll be more gear talk and tactics later on.
Episode 5 – About Safety and Security
Sep 21, 2009 Philosophy, Preparedness and Mazlow
Continuing on with the whole Mazlow’s Hierarchy of Needs theme, I’ve moved us up to the second level. Here we try to meet the needs of safety – safety of home, body, family, morality and employment. Again, it’s a brief overview with just a few details. In the coming weeks, once we’ve made it through the hierarchy, we look at a few of these in greater detail.
So far, so good. I don’t think I mentioned this in the podcast like I wanted to, however I read that the hierarchy is used by advertising agencies to sell to our needs and insecurities. I’ll touch on that more tomorrow along with a ‘revelation’ I had about that.
